Smith Center Museum Store Offers Unique Shopping
With the opening of the Smith Center Museum Store on the
first floor of the
R.R. Smith Center for History & Art, another exciting
part of this historic railroad hotel has come to life.
The purpose of the store is to support the missions of
the three co-owners of the Smith Center – the Augusta
County Historical Society, Historic Staunton Foundation,
and the Staunton Augusta Art Center -- and to raise
money for operating expenses for the cultural center
that is quickly becoming a happening place in downtown
Visitors to the store will see a variety of items that
include "treasures" such as quilts, prints, and antiques
of the three groups, as well as consignment art and
books, and a few unique items created especially for the
new store. A number of local artists and authors have
works of art and books featured at the store. Visitors
to the store have commented that they enjoy coming back
again and again to discover what is new to the displays.
fastest selling items in the store have been the ceramic
tiles (trivets) made from close-up photographs of
various historic quilts featured in the historical
society's "Stitch in Time" quilt exhibit last fall.
The store is
staffed by part-time manager Rachel Salatin as well as
a loyal group of volunteers. If you would like to see a
particular item stocked in the store, would like to
donate an item (tax deductible), or would like to sign
up as a volunteer, please email Rachel at
or phone her at the Smith Center at 540-886-8755.
Remember the Smith Center Museum Store in downtown
Staunton for a unique shopping experience.
